GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery)
GNM or General Nursing and Midwifery is a three-year diploma programme is designed
for students who want to pursue a career in clinical nursing. The GNM diploma program at Dumka
College of Health & Professional Education includes a six-month internship at Dumka College of
Health & Professional Education, Ranchi, a 850 bed teaching hospital, accredited by NABL and
pre-accredited by NABH, which is a constituent multispecialty hospital. The hospital is fully
equipped with advanced, world-class diagnostic and therapeutic equipment’s and supported by a highly
qualified and competent trainers. In Dumka College of Health & Professional Education, we committed
to prepare nurses with sound educational programme in nursing and enable them to function as
efficient members of the health team, beginning with the competencies for first level positions in
all kinds of health care settings.
It aims at identifying health need of the people, planning and providing quality patient care in
collaboration with other health professionals in all the health care centers and communities. Scope
of nursing practice includes provision of promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative
aspects of care to people across their life span in wide variety of health care settings. All the
practices in nursing profession is based on evidence based also practices were done following
application of basic concepts and principles derived from physical, biological, behavioral sciences
and medicine.

Course Objective
- To help students develop an ability to cooperate and coordinate with members of the health team
in the prevention of disease, promotion of health and rehabilitation of the sick.
- To apply knowledge from the humanities, biological and behavioural sciences in functioning as a
nurse.
- To function effectively with members of the health team and community applying the knowledge of
human relations and communication skills in her work.
- To prepare students, enable them to use of ethical values in personal and professional life.
- To mobilize community resources and their involvement in working with the communities.
- To demonstrate basic skills in teaching patients and giving nursing care to them.
- To assist in research activities.
Duration
Duration : 3 YEARS.
Eligibility
- 10+2 with English and must have obtained a minimum of 40% at the qualifying examination and
English individually for any recognized board. Candidates are also eligible from State Open
School recognized by State Government and National Institute of Open School (NIOS) recognized by
Central Government. However, Science is preferable.
- 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in vocational ANM course from the school recognized by Indian Nursing council.
- 10+2 with English having 40% of marks in Vocational Stream-Health care Science from a recognized CBSE board/State/Centre.
- Registered ANM with pass mark.
- The entry qualification equivalency i.e., 12th standard will be obtained by Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi. Institution, State Nursing Council will be responsible to ensure that the qualification and eligibility will be equivalent to what has been prescribed as above.
- Note: A committee to be formed consisting of medical officer authorized by medical board of state government and a nursing expert in the panel which may decide whether the candidates have the disability of locomotor of 40% to 50%. 5% of total marks is relaxed for SC/ST candidates. Any other quotas as per the State Govt.
- Note: Reservation shall be applicable within the sanctioned number of the seats by INC and not above it.
- Admission of students shall be once in a year.
- Students shall be medically fit.
- Minimum age for admission will be 17 years. (as on 31st December of that year) The upper age limit is 35 yrs.
Career Opportunities
GNM diploma holders who have acquired the skills and education required in the field of care-taking and nursing can take up jobs at hospitals, clinics, health departments, CHO (Community Health Officer) or can work as a private health care giver. They can also choose community services or work for NGO’s that spread medical awareness or help the sick. Common job profiles that are always an option are staff nurse, home nurse, health visitor or as a community health worker.
